The Planner News Briefs

October 2008

Greetings: Johanna,
Welcome to this edition of Financial Planning Association of Southern Nevada’s monthly news brief.  In it you will find useful information about our chapter and its programs promoting the financial planning profession.

President’s Message
by Andrew Patai

Hard to believe we are talking about the end of the year already!  That can only mean one thing… our annual holiday party! This year we will be doing something a little different than the last few years.  Rather than our traditional restaurant-based celebration, one of our Board members has graciously offered her home as a place for the event.  We anticipate good food, good fun (remember your White Elephant gift!), and a time to relax and reflect with friends.  See you there!

As you are all aware, our meeting this month will address many of the tax law changes that affect us and our clients.  Joseph Langkilde, CPA, will bring his expertise and share with us some of the changes in tax law that are certain to affect us all.  This is always an insightful and educational meeting.  With so many changes ahead this is a great time to get on top of some of the issues.

In our efforts to provide you with timely information, we also have Jamie Cogburn as a special guest speaker this month as well.  He will be discussing an issue that will certainly impact millions of U.S. households: home foreclosures and how the programs Congress is enacting will benefit them in the current environment.  You don’t want to miss this.

To keep our chapter in sync with fellow chapters and with FPA National, several of our Board members are headed to the National Leadership Conference next month in Denver.  I know from experience that this is a fantastic event to learn from peers around the country and to interact with FPA National on a personal level.  This event is meant to inspire and will help shape strategies for the upcoming year.  We are preparing for our annual Strategic Planning meeting and anticipate our continued effort to bring excellence to our group will be shaped by many of the ideas shared at this conference.

We look forward to seeing you all at our meeting and at our holiday celebration.

Junior Achievement training was postponed until October 20, because of the market crisis. Due to the late start, volunteers won’t start in their program at Batterman Elementary School until the spring term sometime in February. There will be several opportunities for volunteer training from October to January.

Scholarships
by Eleesa Aimaq & Jocelyn Holzwarth

The board is working on establishing a permanent scholarship program. As we work on the details, we have identified our first 2008 candidates. We will be making a series of $50 scholarships to students who are registering for a four-year college majoring in finance to defray some of the application costs. These awards will be administered by the Magnet School for Finance in Las Vegas.

If you have any suggestions or would like to be on the Scholarship Committee, please contact Eleesa Aimaq or Jocelyn Holzwarth.

Taking a tax loss for a business is fine, but not for a hobby

Many people engage in hobbies that they take very seriously. These activities may start out small in time and expense, but grow extensively as time passes. “Hobbyists” then may wonder whether they have become business  owners. The distinction is important from a tax perspective…
