Jocelyn Holzwarth

Dear Fellow Planners:

Happy New Year!  I know that many of you and your clients are pleased to begin a new year and even a new decade.  From an economic perspective, the markets seem to have recovered at least 20% for 2009 and almost 60% off some of the indices lows!  The challenge going forward, especially for us here in Nevada, is that it still doesnt feel like a recovery for many clients.  With Nevada unemployment edging up to 13.1%, clients still have many reservations.

So what are we to do?  Well, for starters at the FPA-NV, we began the year with education, continuing the Fiscally Fit financial series at the Barbara Greenspun Womens Center.  This year we are having a course a month for January through March, with each one stand-alone for content.  Read more below and feel free to volunteer for these popular community outreach seminars.

We also just held our first quarterly continuing education event for FPA members and allied professionals.  We had updates regarding Social Security, some of the new IRS tax law changes, as well as a small business financing option. (Yes, there IS money available!)  We look forward to seeing you at our quarterly education events: make sure to mark your calendar for the April 27th meeting, and check the website and newsletters to keep posted for networking Tween events.

We want to focus on YOU and your clients this year, providing the educational programs and support which can strengthen your relationships with allied professionals and clients and grow your business.  Heres to a successful and productive 2010!

Our Last Program

Whatever your client base, the first FPA-NV quarterly educational meeting had something for you.

Do you have small business clients?  Then you know how tight funding is.  While Small Business Administration itself does not make loans, it does guarantee loans made to small businesses by private and other institutions. William Wilson, CFP®, gave a presentation on the details of the SBA 504 Loan Program, which provides long-term, fixed-rate financing to acquire fixed assets (such as real estate or equipment) for expansion or modernization. It is designed for small businesses requiring “brick and mortar” financing, and is delivered by CDC's (Certified Development Companies)—private, non-profit corporations set up to contribute to the economic development of their communities.

Rita MeierAre any of your clients worried about their retirement options?  Rita Meier helped guide the way through the maze of Medicare and Social Security, providing some invaluable information on links and publications available to the public.  And you know, of course, that the Social Security calculator is on our website already.

Everyone is interested in taxes, especially in this tax transition year. Our third speaker, Richard Gaskin, CFP®, took on IRS tax changes for 2009-10.  Even if you don’t personally do taxes for your clients, Richard had information for you to share with them that’ll not only enhance your professional relationship with your client, but also help build bridges to our tax preparer allied professionals.

This program was sponsored by Phil Downard and Laserfiche.

The FPA-NV is off to a great start for 2010!

Mark Your Calendars

Our next quarterly meeting will be held on the fourth Wednesday of April (4/28) in Las Vegas at UNLV TAM Alumni Center.  We are lining up the speakers and topics.

We are also currently working on a presentation in Reno given by NSDC by William Wilson, more details will follow shortly.

Our third quarterly meeting will be held July 28 in LV at UNLV.

But our fourth quarterly meeting (and annual meeting) will take place on October 27 in conjunction with the Gift Planning Advisors annual symposium to be held at the DW Reynolds Scouting Resource Center.

Eleesa Aimaq Fiscally Fit
by Aleesa Aimaq, CLU

Our first session of 2010 Financial Literacy Program Fiscally Fit, was held on January 12, at the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence in Henderson. The program was attended by over 20 participants. This initial session was co-taught by chapter members Linda Bertuzzi and Deborah Fackett. The participant evaluation of the program was very positive. The major criticism was: why don't we have this on the west side of town too? We're working on it!

This program is designed as an introduction to personal finance and financial planning and is given in three sessions. the next session will be: Investment Basics and Retirement Planning presented on February 9, from 6-8 PM at the Greenspun WomensCenter. Click here for more information.

The Gift Planning Advisors
The Gift Planning Advisors formed last year an an unincorporated association of local foundations and financial and estate planning professional groups here in Las Vegas for the purpose of promoting estate planning and gift planning strategies.  It held its first annual symposium on October 7, 2009 which was a huge success with local professionals. The GPA group is now in the process of filing for not-for-profit corporate status to expand its programs and form a coalition of financial and estate planning professionals to better serve the public and charitable foundations. We are happy to announce that the Financial Planning Association of Nevada has a seat on the new GAP board. We look forward to working with the GPA and our other professional colleagues in providing a higher level of quality professional education to Nevada professionals.
