The Planner News Briefs

April 2010

Greetings :
Welcome to this edition of Financial Planning Association of Nevada’s monthly news brief.  In it you will find useful information about our chapter and its programs promoting the financial planning profession.

Jocelyn HolzwarthPresident’s Message
by Jocelyn Holzwarth

Dear Fellow Planners:

April 15th is finally here and many of us will be breathing “sighs of relief,” not to mention taking much needed vacations!  Of course the passing of the first tax deadline simply means that clients are now focused on their finances and it is a wonderful opportunity for dialogue, tax planning and financial planning in general.

The FPA of Nevada held its first 'Tween event on Tuesday, March 30th, and it was a great success!  We had a presentation on the role financial planners can play in various divorce proceedings as well as common divorce financial mistakes (good for 1 CFP CE).  A lively discussion ensued followed by much networking over appetizers and cocktails.   We had very positive feedback on the format and venue and would encourage you to suggest other topics you would like to see for future 'Tween meetings.

Remember to mark you calendars for our upcoming second quarterly educational event to be held on Wednesday, April 28th.  We will have a wide range of topics including sessions on mediation as a financial planning tool, asset protections trusts, as well as identity theft.  Be sure to mark your calendars for this timely CE event.

We hope your spring is going well and we look forward to seeing you at the next program!

Government Relations

(From Dan Barry FPA Government Relations Chair)The Financial Planning Coalition provided an update on the progress of our efforts to establish oversight of financial planning as a distinct profession. FPA chapter leaders played an active role in advocating for this legislation.

The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs passed the financial regulatory reform legislation: “Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010.”… It was a narrow, common sense, pro-consumer proposal designed to arm the public with the ability to distinguish and select qualified and ethical financial planners.

The financial planning study is an important first step. Major regulatory reform generally takes many years and often starts with government studies and recommendations for congressional action.  FPA and the Coalition has clearly raised the level of understanding, discourse, and consideration of the need to regulate financial planners among policymakers in both the House and the Senate.

Gift Planning Advisors Inc - Partners with FPA-NV

The Gift Planning Advisors has completed its incorporation process. One of its first acts was to partner with the FPA-NV to handle its administrative needs. The GPA will become a contributing partner to FPA-NV. The FPA-NV will work with the GPA Board handling its bookkeeping, meeting minutes and administration, event planning, as well as helping them develop their website.

The GPA has set the date for the Annual Looking Ahead Conference which will take place on October 28 at the DW Reynolds Scouting Center. The program committee has already lined up top-notch speakers for the event. The GPA is now looking for sponsors to help underwrite this program. If you would like to become a sponsor or know of anyone who would like more information, contact Dennis Filangeri, exec@fpanv.org.

Activity Fees and Assessments

The FPA-NV Board has reviewed its assessment and activity fees policy and made some changes to better serve the membership and other financial service professionals who would like to take advantage of our outstanding educational programs.

In order to provide high quality educational programs that will qualify for professional continuing educational credit, it is necessary to have activity fees for our programs to defray operational costs. We have lowered our non-member activity fees from $100 to $75 per program, but as an additional incentive we now offer Season Passes.

Program fees for FPA members are $50 per program, but with a season pass, members can attend all programs for only $100 per year. FPA-NV members are assessed this fee with their annual dues renewal. Non-FPA members can obtain a seasonal pass for $150 per year.
