Happy New Year and welcome to this edition of Financial Planning Association of Nevada’s monthly news brief. In it you will find useful information about our chapter and its programs promoting the financial planning profession.
President’s Message Greg Crawford Happy New Year! Your FPA of Nevada Board of Directors met in Las Vegas on January 7th to finalize our chapter goals for 2011 and to begin an implementation strategy. Our chapter goals adopted for 2011 include: Holding our chapter’s first Financial Planning Day in October Developing FPA Student Chapters at UNR and/or UNLV Leveraging sponsors to reestablish ’Tween Educational programs with an emphasis on business and practice development Financial Planning Day is a national pro-bono event held each October, which features planners from the Financial Planning Association® and Certified Financial Planner™ professionals, volunteering their time and expertise to work with Nevada residents one-on-one to address important financial issues. Developing student chapters is a relatively new initiative that is gaining momentum across the country. FPA's student chapters seek to provide students the opportunity to learn about financial planning, have exposure to financial planning professionals, obtain internship and employment opportunities and develop leadership skills. Currently, neither UNR nor UNLV have such chapters. Last, but not least, we are leveraging our relationships with potential chapter sponsors to develop evening programs for our membership, with a particular focus on business and practice development. These will be in addition to, and not in place of, the quarterly CE-orientated meetings. Again, Happy New Year! Greg Upcoming Programs Our next Quarterly Educational Program will be on January 26. If you were born before November 2010, you will recognize that our speakers will be addressing the hot buttons of the 2010 mid-term elections and how they impact you, your practice, and your clients. You won't want to miss this program. Celebrating their fifth anniversaries are: Kenneth Bickford, Richard Rainone, and Sheldon Rosenberg. Public Awareness/Student Relations Eleesa Aimaq I have been assigned by the Board to investigate starting up a student chapter at UNLV and/or the other schools of higher learning in town. If you have any contacts in the finance area at UNLV or another institution, please let me know. The Clark High School Magnet program is always looking for one-on-one mentors for their students. The time involved is brief and flexible. I continue to enjoy the company of a mentee/student. It has been a lot of fun and very rewarding to see them grow and progress. If you have any interest and might like to hear what this entails, give me a call. The Magnet program is also looking for summer internships for their students. We received the following from Sonja Brouwers: It's that time of year when I come, hat in hand, and respectfully ask for your assistance in helping me secure internships for our qualified Academy of Finance students. The internship program is such a valuable component of our overall AOF experience - it allows students to engage in work-based learning and to utilize some of the skills and abilities they have gained in their Academy classes. If you think there is even a slight possibility that you could take the step and hire one of our students for the summer or know of some civic-minded person who may be willing to do so, please let me know. Eleesa Aimaq 702-275-1940 News Briefs The Board of Directors held a special planning meeting on January 7 to establish its goals and plans for 2011 and to establish committees in order to achieve those goals. The Board is very excited about the opportunities for 2011 especially in establishing new programs such as Financial Planning Day and its Business and Practice Development program (formerly 'Tween - meetings).
