The Planner News Briefs

May-June 2011

Greetings Dennis:
Welcome to this edition of Financial Planning Association of Nevada’s monthly news brief.  In it you will find useful information about our chapter and its programs promoting the financial planning profession.

Greg CrawfordPresident’s Message
Greg Crawford

The FPA of Nevada is making progress with our 3 main goals for 2011.  These goals include holding our first Financial Planning Day in October, developing FPA student chapters at UNR and UNLV, and leveraging sponsorship relationships to expand our programming offers for our members.

Thank you to the many members who have contacted me about the Financial Planning Day.  Although we have not finalized all of the details, we will hold the day (in Reno and Las Vegas) during the national Financial Planning Week, October 3-9th.  If you are interested in volunteering approximately ½ day to meet with members of the public who usually don’t have access to CFP®’s, please email me at greg.crawford@snwmllc.com or JB Batiste at audry@precisefp-llc.com.

Additionally, we are in the process of forming student chapters at both UNLV and UNR.  Students and faculty at each university have been supportive of this new national effort by the FPA and we can take pride the fact that it appears both major campuses in Nevada with have student chapters in place by next fall.

Finally, our increased educational/meeting calendar is receiving good member support and turnout. If you have sponsors or potential topics for future presentations, please let us know.

As always, we are here to help your practice and our profession.

Our next Quarterly Educational Program will be on July 27 at UNLV Tam Alumni Center. This will be a very special program focusing on marketing financial services in this economy and maximizing utilization of networking and social networks and the Internet. Unless you have all the clients you will ever need, you won't want to miss this program.

Managing Partner, Paula Yakubik and VP of Corporate Communications, Kassi Belz, will lead us in a group seminar on ways to improve client relations. This program will also be available to members in good standing by web conferencing. More details to follow.

We are also working an economic update and case study to round out the program. Visit our website for updates and more details.

Financial Planning Day

The Pro-Bono Steering Committee has selected Saturday, October 8,  for our special Financial Planning Day to be conducted in Las Vegas and in Reno. The program is open to the public, who will have access to three 30 minute presentations as well as one-on-one sessions with chapter member volunteers to get a head-start on financial planning.

The programs will include three presentations:

  • Managing Your Money in Hard Times
  • A Financial Fire Drill
  • Forging Your Financial Future

Chapter members in good standing will provide opportunities for the attendees to meet with them and review their situation and participate in the Foundation for Financial Planning's Money101 assessment.

This program is part of the National Financial Planning Day program.

If you would like more information about participating as a volunteer or as a program sponsor, please contact Dennis Filangeri, Chapter Executive, exec@fpanv.org.

We are also working on a joint program with the Society for Financial Planning to held in September.  If you have any suggestions for future programs, please pass that information on to Jason Walker (jason@jeffreyburr.com) and Jackie Thornhill (jacqueline.thornhill@thewealthcarecenter.com).

JB BatisteFPA-Nevada to Host Financial Planning Day in Las Vegas and Reno

Audry (JB) Batiste (LV)

Mark your calendars!  FPA Nevada will host its first-ever Financial Planning Day in Las Vegas and Reno on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

This is our opportunity to provide local Las Vegas and Reno area residents with free financial planning advice from professional financial planners.  We want our members to volunteer their time and expertise to work with local residents one-on-one to address important financial issues.

You will meet one-on-one with attendees to answer questions on budgeting, getting out of debt, income taxes, dealing with mortgage foreclosures, paying for college, estate planning and insurance, among many other topics.  Advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis.

The event will also feature a series of classroom-style educational workshops addressing key personal finance topics, including: Financial Fire Drill: Tips to Cope with Loss of Income; Managing Money in Hard Times: Dealing with Credit Cards, Foreclosure and Unemployment; and Planning for Your Financial Goals.

We believe that with our collaborative resources, we can provide the financial planning knowledge and guidance to people who need it most and empower them to achieve their life goals.
